Wait a Minute Monday

As the name of this post implies, I'm gonna need a minute~*

Today is the last day of class, then its Finals Week. While not teaching takes pressure off, the width and breadth of paperwork that is currently forming a mountain range on my desk is gonna take some time. Plus there are the track meets...lots of track meets {one Saturday in Virginia, one this afternoon at a local school & more & more}. I will definitely post this week, but it may be a bit random & as time allows.

The upside is that after this week, I will be very nearly free & clear. A division meeting on Monday, graduation to attend Tuesday night, then my summer really begins. I have tons of stuff planned-- some academic {refining classes, publishing a few things & working on a book}, some DIY projects I've accumulated over the semester, & even a room remodel for Thing 2. While I'll leave the academia for the academics, I will definitely be posting lots on the others, plus a few rants I've had in mind & a few surprises, no doubt.  I can't wait *sigh*

So here's hoping everyone has a splendid week!

Some Thoughts for a Thundering yet Thoughtful Thursday~*

Almost to the proverbial finish line!  Tuesday/Thursday classes wrapped for the semester, one Monday/Wednesday class yet to teach...ah, love that light at the end of the tunnel~*

The lack of pictures are not for a lack of trying.  We've been under rain clouds and thunderstorm watches all week.  Gray & dismal &, at times, rather loud-- not conducive to outfit pictures...sigh...

And so we come to the thoughtful part of this Thursday.  I'm guessing we could all use a little inspiration now & again, right?  So here are some of my favorite quotes to ponder...

I am a quote collector, no doubt-- do you have any favorites?

Wednesday Registration!

Just got home from registering Thing 3 for her first year of high school!  No post of any substance for tonight-- too much still to do.  But I do have thoughts for Thursday & thought I'd leave you a sneak preview...

Hope you've all had a stellar Wednesday~*

Music Monday & a Giveaway~*

Ah & now we are on the last week of teaching.  Monday 4/30 is the last official class day, so as I have wrapped my classes for today, the last week can officially begin.  Of course then there is final's week & endless grading to do before grades can be submitted, then there is graduation to attend {& I never went to any of my graduations so I feel sort of hypocritical wearing full academic regalia just to sit in an audience, but there it is}.  Ah but it is the last week of teaching none-the-less.
Posts will be short this week, & I'll have lots of blog reading to catch up on by the time next weekend rolls around...things get busy 'round this time o' year as I hear students' pleas for mercy mwahahahaha
But it is music & not at all maniacal Monday, so without further ado I give you a spoonful of sugar to help Monday go down...

Any new music you've been listening to lately?  I'm always looking for new sounds...though I am not a fan of twangy country {my ears bleed a little just thinking of it}

On the good news front, the delightful Caitlin of To Make Love Stay is having a giveaway.  Since I was just rambling on a scant few days ago about supporting independent artists, it seemed apropos to include a link to her giveaway.  It is for a $20 gift certificate to put towards an original piece from After Nine to Five Decor... I want the Star Wars one...its on my list.  So go try your luck & register for the giveaway, & while you are there, follow Caitlin's blog {you won't be sorry!}

An Irreverent Sunday~*

I LOVE this show with all capital letters.

Its an Irish sitcom that ran from 1995-1998.  I discovered it in the late 90's on BBC America, & have since downloaded every episode from all sorts of suspect & quite possibly nefarious sites.  But it was totally worth adding another page to my FBI file.

From the wiki description:

Set on the remote fictional Craggy Island off Ireland's west coast, the show starred Dermot Morgan as the titular Father Ted Crilly, alongside fellow priests Father Dougal McGuire (Ardal O'Hanlon) and Father Jack Hackett (Frank Kelly). Exiled on the island for various past incidents, the priests live together in the parochial house with their housekeeper Mrs. Doyle (Pauline McLynn).

What the above neglects to mention is that its freakin' hilarious.

It is also incredibly irreverent.  Incredibly irreverent suits this household just fine, but I understand if it is not everyone's cup of tea.
Go on you'll have a cup

If you can't laugh about religion or crisis of faith or what it is to be human or all manner of other things traditionally meant to be taken very seriously, this show is not for you....here lemme give you a snippet so you can see what I mean:

The above is from Tentacles of Doom & it made me laugh until I cried.  If you chuckled, guffawed or otherwise snickered, you need to watch this show.
While the residents of Cecilia adore all the episodes of Father Ted, the most quoted scene is from the first episode in the 2nd season, entitled Hell:

I made rice pudding last night. With cocaine in it.  Oh wait, not cocaine.  God, what am I on about. No, whaddya call 'em....raisins.   *Giggle*  We repeat variations of those lines a lot 'round here.  I said it last night obviously & the Things said it all morning.  And the no bit...being a word God gave us if we don't want any cake.  *Giggle Giggle*

Anyway.

If you like Monty Python type humor, you'll love it.  The hubs & I decided to have a Father Ted marathon whilst I was updating the blog & doing laundry & he was doing class prep for Monday.  Nothing better than watching a show that you know by heart that still makes you laugh.

What are the shows you go to when you are in the mood for a good, soul-tickling giggle?

Here's hoping your weekend was full of everything that makes life glorious-- & lots & lots of laughter~*

Sunday Decor~*

I am spending the afternoon viciously rearranging my blog environment to give it a summery vibe.  So pardon if she keeps trying new looks on!

If you have been wanting to try out some new looks, here are two sites that I've stumbled upon--
Hot Bliggity Blog
Shabby Blogs

All you have to do is copy the code {Hot Bliggity actually copies it for you when you hit install}, then click the "design tab" on your blog, then the "layout" link.  Once there, click to "Add a Gadget," I put mine on the footer, and choose HTML/Javascript to add then edit.  Don't put a title or anything, just paste the code into the body and click save.  Preview, then "save arrangement" and there you go!

A Versatile Award ~*

It must be award season {I can just about hear the fanfare, though the red carpet has yet to arrive}

JanMLoves nominated me for a Versatile Blogger Award!  She is much too sweet~*  I brought up JanMLoves' wonderful blog in my Liebster post-- I am a huge fan, so this is a real treat~*
The rules are.....
1  Thank the blogger who has nominated you in your post.
2. Nominate 5 bloggers who are "new" to blogging.
3. Let them know you have nominated them.
4. Share 5 random facts about yourself.
5. Copy & paste the versatile blogger picture to your post!

My Five Nominees
Since starting my little corner of the interwebs, I've noticed that the hardest part about blogging is connecting with others.  That said, I've been lucky to connect with some extremely talented women purely by accident, but in general terms...you get my drift-- writing the posts is relatively easy, and photography is fun {particularly when you happen to have a talented daughter}, but finding your audience is hard.  So for my 5 nominees I give you five blogs that are new to me, & could use a little more attention. Please check 'em out, & give 'em a follow!

Salt & Wine
Sure Why Not?
Be Lovely
My Family, My Life

And here are the 5 random facts about me:

1. I love coffee-- bold, dark & with nothing but coffee flavor in it.

oh coffee, let's be friends forever. 8x10 Inspiring Photographic Print.
 Etsy Print

2. I play World of Warcraft to unwind...which I have mentioned before, but you may not be aware how deep the rabbithole goes.  I have dozens of characters all told, but 10 on my favorite realm-- 4 level 85s {highest level atm...not much cache in the blogging community, I understand, but Thing 2 & friends think I'm badass}...

Mariyah: Troll Hunter
Cyriacus: Blood Elf Mage
Ianto: Human Paladin
Tenskawatawa: Blood Elf Paladin
& I am waiting with bated breath for this to release~*

3.  As further evidence of my nerd credentials, I am also a sci-fi nut.  Speaking strictly of televsion {cos if I talked about movies we'd be here all night}, I love serious sci-fi like Dr. Who, Torchwood, & the corny side of science like the original Star Trek {I had a childhood crush on Capt. Kirk} and MST3K.
For the serious sci-fi aficionado, here's a bit of my favorite modern Dr. Who episode:

For those of you poor people who are unaware of the joys of MST3K, here is my favorite episode on what is quite possibly the worst movie ever ever ever made.  Ever.  Ever.  Anyway, once you get the idea, you can throw your own MST3K themed party, all you need is lots of liquor & a bad movie {I recommend starting with any of Steven Seagal's early films...very easy to make fun of}

4.   I'm utterly insane for middle eastern/Mediterranean food.  The happiest day in my life is when an Iraqi family moved to our neck of the woods and opened a restaurant {shout out to Babylon~*}

*hugs*

Baba Ganoush
Turkish Coffee...sigh

Sambousa...yummmm

5.  I study civil disobedience in American History {yeah, I'm a rabble-rouser}.  I'm actually kinda good at what I do, & have been lucky enough to be brought out to other campuses {particularly in NYC} to talk about my thesis, civil disobedience in general & how to teach history.  No worries, I won't bore you with the details LOL

On our last trip to NY-- got to talk at CUNY which was most awesome

That's it for me!  Now I'm off to make some rice pudding {the handsome man pictured above cooked piri-piri chicken with rice & rice pudding makes for a yummy Sunday breakfast~*}  Hugs to all of you!

Funky Friday

I am so very over this week {TGIF baby}

One week & one day of classes left to teach {last day in April 30}.  Then finals week.  Then graduation week. Then a sweet summer.  I think I can make it~*

Here's to good friends, fun times & great weekends!

Zombie Thursday

Long day.  Long day.  I am so very, very tired...

The entire collection of Things, the hubby & I stayed up late last night telling family stories & generally goofing around...Thing 1 darted off in her scion sometime after 11 & shortly after midnight Cecilia {the house} had closed for the night & her residents were all snug in their beds.

Printed Pillowcases Black on white cotton Sleep Tight Don't Let the Bedbugs Bite
Pillow Case Set

I had taken a benadryl {allergies are particularly bad 'round these parts this time o'year} so I did not so much drift off to dreamland as slam into the slumber zone & was gone to the world until suddenly & without warning I woke up.  For no reason.

I looked at my phone which doubles as my alarm clock & plays this to wake me up ...

{get it?  my alarm?  Awake my Soul?...I like to wake up feeling clever}

...and a big blue eery icky 3:03 was glaring back at me.  I set it back down.  I settled back against my pillows.  I proceeded not to sleep.

Left side...nope...right side...flip the pillow...shove off the duvet...pull duvet back up...left side...I am now vigorously not sleeping.  In fact, I would say I have become an avid & dedicated non-sleeper.  I look at my phone...
4:2ACK.  I drop it without committing to the final minute because somehow not knowing what followed the 2 made things a wee smidge better. 'If I get to sleep now,' I tell my brain using my sweetest inner monologue voice, 'I can get 2 hours & a handful of minutes sleep to add to the 2.5ish I had gotten earlier. Pwetty, pwetty pwease?'  My brain chuckles evilly.  I start to panic...

Left side...nope...right side...fluff the pillow...flatten the pillow.  Still not sleeping.  Toss...turn....roll over & ah hell the damn zombies are coming in the window again.

Eco-friendly, Hand-stitched, Zombeh Kitteh
Bad Zombeh Kitteh Its Meh Sleepy Time

I can not adequately explain how deeply annoyed I was.  I needed desperately to get to sleep & here I was having to contend with zombies.  Damn undead jerks.  "Seriously," I whine to the hubs, "how many times do we have to deal with this?"  I roll my eyes.  I shake my head.   I thwack one of 'em as it tries to bite my knee.  Thing 3 pointed out that it wasn't dead, so she smacked it with a particularly hefty fashion magazine...

1970s Vintage Fashion Magazines- Set of 3 Harper's Bazaar
Vintage Harper's Bazaar Magazines

...which seriously ticks me off as I have not yet read said mag & now I wasn't going to be able to because it was covered in zombie goo.  I chastise Thing 3.  Just because there are zombies doesn't mean we should forget what is really important.  I advise her to use the dictionary instead because in this day & age no one needs a dictionary anyway.  Kids.  They can be worse than the zombies.

At this point, the undead are seriously piling up in the bedroom which truly upsets me nearly to tears because not only had I lost that precious 2 hours & a handful of minutes of sleep which obviously meant I was going to be exhausted at work NOW I was going to have to come home & steam clean the freakin' bedroom carpet to get the smell out.  They were particularly oozy zombies, if it all weren't bad enough, & OH MY GOD THING TWO IS WEARING HIS TRACK SPIKES INSIDE.  I swear I almost let the little zombie on the bookshelf nibble Thing 2s shoulder just to show him but then I remember our insurance wouldn't cover it so I chuck my slipper at the zombie instead.

Damn.

Zombies.

The hubs decides that its time to bring in the machinery which further agitates me because I don't understand why on earth he wouldn't have let me know he had zombie fighting equipment in his sock drawer.  He pulls out the wind up tank & a few matchbox cars & tells me to get into the one that looks something like the  AT-AT Walkers from Empire Strikes Back only it has a lovely, shiny, beige & tan stripe pattern & I'm thinking after I crush the zombies with it I might turn it into a nightstand...

File:Battlehothesb.JPG
Look at those zombie crushin' tootsies & the neat-o laser thing & to think my man had it in his sock drawer...no wonder I love him so

I climb in & it starts right up zip zip.  So much fun to drive *thump* creeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaakkkkk *thump* creeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaakkkkk I think I'll drive it to work.  &  look it even has a built in featherbed, which I climb in to.  Bliss.  Then it hits me.  I'm sleeping!  Oh thank god I don't know what I would have done if I hadn't been able to fall asleep & here I am dreaming about zombies which is weird but hey its sleep and how awesome is that...

oh crap.

& just like that I was awake.

2.5 hours of benadryl sleep. 45 minutes of zombie fighting.

So you will have to forgive me, I'm going to bed.

And if the zombies come in don't call me cos I don't give a damn.

Treasures for Tuesday with a Twist~*

I teach both history and humanities at a local college {in case you've missed that lol}.  As the semester winds down, my humanities classes are getting to the modern era, which means more discussion {now the students are on familiar territory-- they may not be able to tell classical from baroque, but they get the difference between hip hop & gangsta rap, if you follow my meaning}.  In two of my classes,  HUM2350: Technology in Society and HUM2020: Humanities from the Renaissance through Today, we started discussing how the internet has affected art in America {in 2350 we were talking about the internet, in 2020 we were talking about modern art-- and students in both classes brought it up independently}.
One of the great fears propagated by the media, both in the visual and audio arts, was that the internet was somehow going to damage the quality of art and/or music produced.  It should be fairly evident that this concern was primarily verbalized by the "taste-makers" aka the music and art industry who had, until recently, chosen what music and/or art was promoted.
As it is turning out, the direct opposite is true.  We are starting to enter an artistic renaissance of sorts.  While it is quite possibly true that the internet will end the commercialism of art {and therefore end the mind boggling pay outs to "artists" like Britney Spears or Thomas Kinkade-- may he rest in peace}, it is actually bringing art to a whole new level.  Now a talented musician can find an audience essentially for free through youtube & sell cds on demand, an aspiring novelist can publish his or her opus independently & sell it online-- and visual artists can paint and/or print out their masterpiece for those who truly appreciate it and sell it for what said audience is willing to pay.  Heck, even paint-by-number maestros have fans!

And really, isn't that the upside of living in a capitalist system?  The ability to purchase what we like without having someone else tell us what is good or bad, or determining what is valuable and what is not?

All of this is leading up to today's treasures, I promise.

So as I was pondering all of the debating that had gone on today, I decided to do a different sort of treasure list for this thunderstorm-y Tuesday {which, incidentally, is why there are no pics today}.  Instead of my usual collections of whatever I think is cool, I'm going to spotlight 5 original artists on ETSY that I think you should check out.  Now I know what you are thinking-- 5 is half of ten, so how is this the normal ten treasures post?  Ah-ha, I reply, really its infinitely more than ten because each artist has several original pieces available for sale.
And each artist's work is affordable, original & very worth it.
In the spirit of ushering in a new artistic revolution, I think you should give 'em a look, favorite them on etsy {if you don't already have a free account take a second to fill it out-- it doesn't cost anything...which is why its free...duh} & encourage artists worldwide in the process.

#1

Eszter Schall of I Love Lawrence.

{In the interest of full disclosure, I am a major fan...I already own three of her pieces}

And here they are above our mantle:  The Trumpeter, Pampillo & Morning

I think I'm going to make this a regular feature in my little corner of the interwebs-- a way to promote artists & craftsmen that might otherwise go unnoticed.  Obviously with my small readership it won't accomplish much...or will it?  After all, if y'all blog about one of these artists {or other artists that you appreciate}  & your readers blog about 'em maybe we could help this little artistic renaissance along by encouraging artists to keep doing what they are doing.  Wouldn't it be grand to live in a world where a child could tell a parent they wanted to be an artist & the parent's first thought wouldn't be "oh no, how will you feed yourself?"

It would certainly be more whimsical, fanciful & colorful at any rate-- and I can't think of a single human that wouldn't benefit from some rainbow-colored whimsy~*

PS
Ironically, right after I published this post I went to Bloglovin' to check what you beautiful people had to say, & saw the post by Elycia offering a giveaway of a friend's cd {Chantilly}.  Since it was in the spirit of my own post, I figured I'd do an embed of her music {which is stellar} and a link to the giveaway.  Good Luck & Enjoy!

Music Monday~*

A beautiful Monday, though thunderstorms are apparently looming.  Ah well, enjoy it while we can I 'spose...

Cardigan / Old Navy ; Belt / Forever 21 ; Top & Skirt / Thrifted; Tights & Shoes / Target
I had a great day-- classes went smashingly well, office hours were productive, all -n- all a great day, no complaints...

Sunglasses / cheap :) ; Chihuahua Mutt / Poosh {& no you can't buy him}
Funny story about Poosh.  Thing 1 decided to her move in to her own apartment last year & 3 months before move in day she announced that she wanted a companion.  We already had 3 cats & two dogs, but she really wanted a mini something {a purse dog, I call 'em}.

After talking it over, the hubby, me Thing 1 & Thing 3 headed down to the animal shelter while Thing 2 was at practice.  While there Thing 3 unexpectedly fell in love with an adorable terrier mutt & begged so sweetly that we caved & thus Alice was adopted into our household  & she is the sweetest, jumpiest, twirliest girl ever.

She also doesn't get the whole pose for the camera thing
But I digress...

So Thing 1 debated while sitting amongst a plethora of minis in all shapes & colors that were in one huge kennel.    She waited & pondered then chose...but the one she wanted she couldn't get because there was already a waiting list.  And thus fate brought us Poosh.

Oh and why Poosh? Fast forward to 6:07 - 6:33...  or better yet, watch the whole episode~*

But I digress.

So, you are no doubt thinking, if Thing 1 got Poosh to co-habitate with her at her new digs, why does Poosh keep making appearances in your blog photos?

Because it very quickly became clear that Poosh was not an apartment friendly pet, as evidenced by the shoebox size hole he tore in her carpet {goodbye security deposit}.  Because, as a busy college student with a part time job, Thing 1 was not home very much, which meant yippy barks echoed around her apartment complex all day long.  Because, when she did have time off,  Thing 1 wanted to be able to travel to visit Chill Joe "Muffin" McGee & a variety of other people, which meant Poosh was dropped off at our place for days at a time.  And because the hubs & I , though skeptical at first, grew to love him madly as the granddoggie we never wanted.

And so Thing 1 took a cat instead...

Zelda...& she is very happy being spoiled by Thing 1 too

And we got a Poosh...

And life once again became groovy~*

On this hip, doggie-o,  music Monday, I offer you a childhood favorite of mine.  By the time I was born, the Monkees had already been off the air for 2 years.  Nonetheless, the show went in to glorious syndication in my youth.  When I was around, oh, 10? 12?  it aired every day during the summer at 12 noon.  And no matter what, I was always sure to race inside to see it.  I had a huge crush on Mike {the dude in the hat}, then Micky {the dude singing}.  What can I say, I was a fickle preteen.  I eschewed Davy because everyone liked him.  And Peter was a dork {sorry Peter, but you know its true}.
As I was writing this post I thought of this song--

If I was looking for a word to describe what I was going to buy I think dog would be the word.  That Micky.  What a cut up~*

Here's hoping your Monday is the grooviest yet!

Short & Sweet Sunday

Keeping it short & sweet today-- I have a lot of chores to get done in order to feel good about myself lol~*

Lots of waiting involved in track & field...
This post is a brief celebration of Thing 2 aka Speedy aka Duck {which is what he used to call himself when he was a baby...as in "Duckwannacooky"}. It is always so fun to watch him run...

And he really loves it too-- especially the idea that his sport is other sport's punishments~*

He is definitely planning on running in college where he want to get a degree in Physical Eduation, & aspires to trying out for the Olympics.  In the meantime he is proud to be running for his high school & to be an asset to his team--

As a treat, he is going to do an occasional post for the blog-- he is quite the nutritionist {at least for teenage boy athletes lol} & is genuinely a good cook...so look for a post on his pizza making techniques in the not to distant future!

He even makes his own crust~*

Hope everyone is having a fantabulous weekend!

Saturday at the Races

Thing 2 had a big meet today-- tons of schools, tons of races, and literally aaaaallllllll  daaaaaayyyyyyy.  We are sunburned,  we are tired & we are very, very proud of our fast boy~*  He came in 5th in his 1600m, and 4th in his 800m {& for a high school freshman competing against juniors & seniors, thats purdy durned good}.  Pics & posts tomorrow~*
As for the hubs & me?  The rest of our night will consist of slathering ourselves with aloe, drinking tons of water & watching Iron Chef-- Good Night Y'all~*

Liebster Blog Award

I am tickled purple {which is so much better than pink} to announce that I have been honoured with a Liebster Blog Award!
I was given the award by the wonderful JoKnows from Woman in Real Life : The Art of the Art of the Everyday.  Her blog is just wonderful-- fantastic vegan recipes served with a generous slice of life {and of course, a cup of tea}.
A stay-at-home Mom {after 14 years at the same job}, JoKnows blogs about her family, a new found love of thrifting, finding beauty in the every day, and of course, gorgeous, healthy food.  Check out her blog, you will be so glad you did!

& I can't thank her enough for thinking of me!

The Liebster Blog Award

Liebster is a German word meaning "dearest." The Liebster Blog Award is given to blogs with less than 200 followers, and recognizes the blog author's creative writing and dedication. It also helps to bring blog owners together to exchange ideas and information.

My Duties

As a Liebster Award recipient, it is my honour to pass the award along to five fabulous bloggers. It was no easy task to select them, because there are so many wonderful blogs that I love to read. But, these are some of the ones that I turn to most often for my daily dose of inspiration.

Who Do You Love?

There are so many blogs out there that I truly enjoy-- & I want to thank all of you bloggers for letting us {your fans} peek into your lives from cyberspace!  I do have some absolute must reads-- blogs that inspire me-- and of course Woman in Real Life is among them.  My other Liebsters are:

Rachael at Sanderson Smith Story is a mother, partner & general dynamo.  Her blog chronicles the adventures of her family-- including their 3 legged dog {Gizzy}, bunny rabbit {Benjy} & a whole cast of family & friends that float in & out as they make their way through life.  I just adore her spirit & her ability to cram 3 million things into one weekend {not to mention her recipes} -- Google Friend her so you won't miss out!

Ruthie of My Trash and Treasure is another favorite o'mine.  She uses her blog to document her life with her husband {in the Army} and two adorable kiddos as they move around, exploring & generally enjoying life {and if they aren't the cutest family ever, then I don't know cute}.  Her stories about her children {and a fish called Elephant} are sure to make you smile-- and her occasional DIY & recipe are sure to inspire.  You definitely won't be sorry you joined her growing fan base!

Oh my gosh, what can be said about the indomitable Maggie B of Finding Myself?  Honest?  Oh yeah-- she calls life like she sees it.   Soul searching?  Undoubtedly-- her quest for happiness & self fulfillment are an inspiration.   Can she cook?  Of course, & her food explorations are drool worthy.  Crafty?  Yup, that too-- & she knits to boot~*  For a clever blog, wittily written & with breathtaking honesty & sincerity, Maggie B simply can not be beat.

A shift from architect to stay-at-home Mom brought Mama Smith to the blogosphere, & blog readers like me have definitely benefited from her arrival!  First off, her photos are beyond gorgeous-- & seeing life through her lens is always a treat.  And her view of life is what makes her blog so wonderful-- she sees everything as only a true artist {or former architect I 'spose} can.  Oh, and then there are these and these...oh so very yum.  Whip 'em up then settle in to catch up on her blog!

And last, but definitely not least, there is Jan of Janmloves.  She is a too cute for words 24 year old exploring southern California-- and she takes us along for her wild ride.  Focusing on fashion & fun, JanMLoves is just a sweet good time {and of course, there are shoes...lots & lots of shoes~*}.

Thanks you to all these wonderful bloggers for their inspiration, humor, beauty & general cleverness.  Please follow their blogs, spread the word & join in on the merriment!
