Trophies

As I mentioned yesterday, in the course of Thing 2's room remodel, we had to figure out something to do with his trophies.
Before the redo, his trophies were displayed thusly:

Yes, those are replica swords: a Greek Falcata, a Roman Gladius and a Crusader sword.  We're still working on finding a better way to display them.

The little gold Thing 2's just sort of hung out on top of his cabinet.  This was fine when he was in little kid sports {soccer and basketball in particular}-- you know, ever kid gets a trophy or medal and a pizza party at the end of the season.  I never did understand that.  If it doesn't matter who wins or loses, then why bother to play the game?  I don't like lying to children.  Winning does matter, one should win with grace, and every loss should be a lesson.  That said, a sport is a sport-- wonderful & empowering but it is still entertainment, not life or death {perspective = the most important thing to teach kids-- without it we get chaos and/or modern American politics}.
But again, I'm digressing...
Now that we are in high school sports, each trophy and medal means something.  Thing 2 wanted a better way to show off his achievement and effort, and this is what we came up with.

Remember that desk I mentioned that we salvaged?  Well one of the drawers had broken, but we still had three good ones. So we cleaned them up, stained the interior and sides & distressed the tops.

Then we attached them to the wall & vuala, instant display boxes! In addition to his trophies, we put a few other precious items-- collectible cars, mementos from particularly difficult races, and, of course, the Red Ranger.

Here is what we have of his study corner so far:

A custom corner desk is going to be built by Thing 2 & Poppy {my dad} sometime this summer & an organizer board is being created by yours truly to hang in that empty space between his trophy shelves & his bib board.  I'm hoping to get it done this week & will post a DIY as soon as I can!  All in all, things are proceeding rather nicely.  Tomorrow I'll be doing some touch up painting & will post a few pics of the rest of his room!

So, whaddya think?

  3. I love it! It is a great way of keeping these items out of the way but on display for celebrating!
