The Non Sequitur

I've said before that I don't particularly enjoy watching television or going to movies.  I have a short attention span, at least when it comes to passive entertainment.  People who know me know that I actually can be doggedly driven to a single purpose when the mood strikes-- I obsess, I ponder, I plan, I will not be diverted.  I pay attention when it matters, is my point.  And for me, television doesn't matter enough for me to carry a plot beyond a single episode.

Jeremy adores Game of Thrones, for example.  I thought it was cool looking, but too high maintenance.  I was going to have to remember stuff from show to show, &  I couldn't get up during an episode or I'd miss something.  Too stressful.

from MyTrashAndTreasure

If I find a show I like, I need to watch all of them immediately.   Which means that I rarely watch currently airing shows.  I watched The Tudors that way-- after it had gone off the air, and was on Netflix and I could watch all of them one after the other.  I quite liked the series, but would never have watched it when it was airing-- too much effort on my end.  I also think that since it was loosely based on historical facts I am familiar with, I could get up and wander around when I got bored and still know what was going on when I came back.

Look!  Squirrel!

Anyway.

Over spring break I indulged in Jeeves and Wooster.  I have been reading the books again as well.  Re- reading counts toward my resolution, just FYI.

Which led to A Bit of Fry and Laurie marathon.

And then Stephen Fry's documentary on Wagner.  Whom I will be teaching about in my Humanities 2020 class this week.

I adore Stephen Fry.  He is brilliant and charming and generally smashing grand. Have you seen QI?  You ought to, you really ought.

Where was I?  Ever look at a blog post and wonder how you got from point A to point B?

So hmmm.  More squirrels!

Tidying Up with Tolstoy

To quote Tolstoy, and who doesn't quote Tolstoy every so often lol...

And I have plenty of them-- plans & projects, I mean, not Tolstoys.

And after you see these links, you'll have plenty of plans & projects too~*

Some spring cleaning tips from Woman in Real Life.  Giveaway for Canadian residents included~*

30 fabulous ideas for fabric scraps.

This, we need.  Our kitchen has organization issues.

A delicious spring veggie recipe Pinterest board. Those asparagus rolls will be made (with some slight gluten free alterations). I'm drooling just looking at 'em.

A whole slew of terra cotta pot crafts. How awesome is that?

I adore these caged birds.  The wheels are turning with how I can modify them to fit in our picture frame...

Lastly, fashion.  For Spring.  Because clothes are cool~*

Incidentally, with all this talk of spring, it is worth noting, that it snowed Monday, forcing campus to close at 12:30.  So all of this loveliness is purely hypothetical at this point.  I know spring exists, and I know it has to come eventually.  I mean, it does, right?

The Pottery Date

This past Saturday Jeremy & I had a little adventure.

We started with Starbucks.  Because seriously, what modern adventure doesn't start with a venti something or other?   It was in the 60s and gorgeous so we sat outside. They are calling for snow next week.  28 degrees on Thursday, so they say.  Sigh.  Gotta enjoy it while its here I suppose.

Then we headed over to Into The Fire, a relatively new paint-your-own-pottery establishment, locally owned and lovingly run.

When we came up with our four resolutions for 2014, we started looking for things to do that would support the local business communities as well as allow us to spend some creative time together.  We are a good team, Jer & I, but it has been a while since we've done a creative project together.

We had an absolute blast.  There were people of all ages-- the spot was jumpin'.  There was a youngsters birthday bash, some women who were regulars, two elderly couples stretching their artistic chops on some vases & a rather terrifying large family of 8 kids, plus "others that couldn't come," who were intent on painting birthday presents for their grandparents-- and a few others.  One table of cute littles came buy and chatted with us about owls.  Some teenagers and college age friends rounded out the crowd.  I told you it was jumping.
We picked a table out of the way a bit, near the paint so we could people watch, but far enough away from the crowd that we could talk in privacy.
Really warm atmosphere, wonderfully friendly staff, great prices...it was really, really wonderful.

I got carried away and chose two little miniatures and an owl mug.  Jeremy picked a nice stein, "for dnd night."  We were there for three hours painting, chatting, laughing at each other's artistic abilities & people watching the afternoon away.  So much fun, sincerely.

We made plans to come back.  We actually need some serving pieces, & we have a cute idea for matching mugs & really I adore the idea of customizing some tchotchkes for around the house.  Next time we will bring some of the brood & I'm dying to bring my Mom...they have a ladies night Ma, the girl at the desk said it gets crazy lol~*

We will be able to pick up our masterpieces next weekend-- I think they will be beautiful & as Jer says, if they suck, at least they are all ours. I'll show you the finished pieces, no fear.  If you have a paint-your-own-pottery place around your hometown, we both highly recommend checking it out~*

We did not get compensated in any way for this post.  We didn't know the owners, and they didn't know us.  It was genuinely a good time had by all!

Hanging Around Cecilia

I've been itching to change over to spring-ish decorations, but with all the snow we've had lately I'm afraid I'd be tempting fate...

We've kept the house relatively clean, given that our whole menagerie has been kept inside-- they actually occupy the furniture mostly...Shoo one away, another takes its place.  Its our own personal petting zoo.

Everything is geared toward winter, from the pet indentations on the cushions to the snow boots on the floor.  Everything is just slightly disarranged, with fleece bathrobes in odd places, scarves over chairs, dried out roses I haven't the heart to throw out, and pillows moved to the side.  You know?

I adore winter, I do.  But the thought of spring is tantalizing isn't it?  The air is sweeter, the sky is bluer.  Its funny how excited I get at the thought of opening the windows, if only for a few hours in the afternoon.

I am proud out of proportion of that picture, by the way.  I went out in the morning to catch some snow pictures, and the sky was so blue-- and that little birdie fellow was singing his heart out.  I caught him mid-warble, thank-you-very-much *bows*.

I suppose I'll wait for a few warmer days-- a little evidence that the seasons are in fact going to change, before I change the decorations around the house.

We'll see...
